Charity Ovbromoka Okieimen
Engr. Prof. Mrs. Charity Ovbromoka Okieimen was born on the 22nd April, 1959 in Agbarha Otor to Late Mr. Jacob Ighakamena Onodje and Mrs. Grace Oboba Onodje both of Ejeba in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. With a father in the Police Force and a business oriented mother, young Charity lived in many cities in Nigeria. She attended Araromi Baptist Primary School, Obalende, Lagos (1965-1967), Our Lady of Lords Primary School, Surulere, Lagos (1967-1971) where she obtained her First School Leaving Certificate. For her secondary school education, she attended two schools, Ibru College, Agbarha Otor and the then elite Owerri Girls Grammar School, Owerri where she obtained her WAEC certificate in division one in 1977. She then proceeded to Federal Government Girls College, Owerri for her A levels (HSC). She proceeded to teach at Asa High School, Aba between 1979 and 1980 after her HSC
In October 1980, she secured admission to the Department of Chemistry, University of Benin where she obtained the BSc. degree in Chemistry in 1983. She further obtained the Postgraduate Diploma in Chemical Engineering in 1985, Masters (M.Eng.) in Chemical Engineering in 1988 and a Ph.D in Chemical engineering in 2008, all at the University of Benin, Benin City.
Prof. Mrs. Okieimen served as Physics and Chemistry teacher in the School of Nursing, General Hospital, Bauchi during her mandatory National Youth Service between 1983 and 1984. She joined the services of the then Bendel State Post-Primary School Board and was posted to Uwelu Secondary School where she taught very briefly from October 1988 to November 1989.
Prof. Mrs. Charity Okieimen started her academic career in 1989, as Lecturer II at the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Benin. She rose through the academic ranks to the position of Professor in 2009, thus becoming the first female to attain the position of professor of engineering in the University of Benin. She has taught several courses in chemical engineering at the University for over thirty years.
As a research Scientist/Engineer with passion for capacity building, Prof. Mrs Charity Okieimen has supervised 3 Ph.D students, over 30 masters students and many Bachelor’s degree students.Prof. Mrs. Charity Okieimen has authored/co-authored over 70 scientific publications in local and international journals and two chapters in a book. She has also attended several national and international conferences.
Prof. Mrs. Charity Okieimen has served the university in many capacities, the notable ones are Head, Department of Chemical Engineering, 2004 – 2006 (first female head) and from 2008 – 2009; Hall Mistress, Hall 1, 2010 – 2014; Member of several committees; External Relation Committee 2002 – 2004; Management Board of Computer Center, 2005 – 2006; Optometry Management Committee, 2010 – 2016; Gender Studies Management, 2010 – 2014; Staff/Students Relations Committee, 2011 – 2014; Monitoring Committee for University of Benin Projects, 2012 – 2014; Monitoring Committee on Anti-corruption and Transparency in University of Benin, 2012 till date; Board of Management of Institute of Public Administration and Extension Services (IPAES), 2012 – 2016; Vice Chancellor’s representative, Faculty of Pharmacy Appointment and Promotions Committee, 2012 till date; Member, Faculty of Engineering Committee on Mentoring of Young Staff 2011 - 2012; Chairman, Faculty of Engineering Committee on Dress Code, 2012 – 2014; Coordinator, Departmental Postgraduate Programme, 2008 – 2009, etc.
She has received several awards including research grants; World Bank Staff Development Project, 1992; TetFund, 2014; Distinguished Staff Adviser, 2004; Mother Figure, Final Year Students, Department of Chemical Engineering, Uniben, 2007/2008; Favorite Lecturer, Final Year Student, Department of Chemical Engineering, 2008/2009; Distinguished Alumnus Medal, University of Benin Alumni Association, 2011.
Outside the University, Prof. Mrs. Charity Okieimen has served as Chairman/team leader and member of Accredictation Panels of the National University Commission (NUC) and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) for various universities. She has also served as External Examiner to various universities in the country and Reviewer for several scientific Journals. She served as member, Planning and Implementation Committee that set up the Edwin Clark University, Kiagbodo, Delta State, 2009. She has also served as Adjunct Lecturer to Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, 2012 – 2013, Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun 2013 – 2014 and visiting Professor, Delta State University, Abraka, Delta State, 2014 – 2015.
Prof. Mrs. Charity Okieimen is a member of several professional bodies, such as Council for the Regulation of Engineers in Nigeria (COREN), Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Nigeria Society of Chemical Engineers (NSCHE).
Her area of research interests are process modeling and optimization of chemical and biochemical system.Prof. Mrs. Charity Okieimen is a woman of faith and very active member of the Assemblies of God Church, Nigeria where she serves as Chairman, Education Committee; Member, Welfare/Empowerment Committee and Member, Evangel Sport Academy.
She loves gardening, cooking and watching telemundo. Prof. Mrs. Charity Okieimen is married to a renowned chemist, Prof. Felix E. Okieimen and they are blessed with children and grandchildren.
