Biography: 

Dr Ernest Osas Ugiagbe is a Lecturer, researcher, resource person, and solicitor and currently lectures in the Department of Social Work, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Benin, Benin-City, Edo State, Nigeria. His teaching and research interest is in gender, social policy legislation, poverty reduction and community development. He joined the services of the University of Benin as Assistant Lecturer in 2001 from the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma where he worked briefly as a lecturer and researcher from 1999 to 2001. He attended the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) for the Diploma in Agriculture; the prestigious University of Nigeria, Nsukka where he was awarded the Bachelor degree in Sociology & Anthropology and Bachelor degree (LL.B) in Laws in 1991 and 1995 respectively. He also holds the Master degree (M.sc) in sociology & Anthropology and the Master degree (MSW) in Social Work both from the University of Benin in 1999 and 2009 respectively. He bagged his doctorate degree in Development (with specialization in Gender studies) from the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma in 2012.

He is a beneficiary of Social Work in Nigeria Project (SWIN-P) grant of Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) for research in Micro Finance Scheme as means of Women Empowerment in South-South Nigeria and was the Edo State Co-coordinator for Local Government Best Practice Survey by The Orderly Society Trust in Collaboration with Human Development Initiatives, July, 2008. He was also a Resource person and Reviewer at the National University Commission (NUC) Basic Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) documents/ major instrument quality assurance workshop/seminar held in Abuja on the 14th- 18th, Dec, 2014. He is currently engaged in gender and community development initiatives and advocacy research in South-South Nigeria. He has published in learned Journals within and outside Nigeria and has presented papers in conferences in and outside Nigeria. He was the Acting Head, Department of Social Work, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Benin, Benin-City, Nigeria from May, 2013 to June, 2015. He is a member of the Nigerian Association of Social Work Educators (NASWE) and the Africa Social Work Association (ASWA); National Association of social Workers; Nigerian Sociological and Anthropological Society and the Rural Sociology Association of Nigeria. His hobbies are Reading, writing, photography, swimming, indoor games and community work. He is happily married with children.
