Biography: 

Prof. (Mrs.) Alice Aiwereye Umweni, first elected female Dean, University of Benin, and former Head of Department is a Professor of Orthodontics in the Department of Preventive Dentistry, School of Dentistry, College of Medical Sciences, University of Benin, Consultant Orthodontist, University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

She teaches Craniofacial Development, its relevance to Orthodontic management of Cleft Lip and Palate patients.
Professor Umweni’s research interest is mainly on the developmental anomalies of the orofacial region and also gender and dental education in Nigeria.
She has published over thirty journal articles chapters in books, conference papers, seminar presentations and she has been guest speaker at many local and international conferences.

Prof. (Mrs.) A. Umweni is the first female Professor of Orthodontics in Nigeria.
She has won several academic and professional awards, amongst which are; Oredo Local Government Bendel State Scholarship award 1973 – 1975, Bendel State Government Scholarship award 1977 – 1981, Dr. V.F.D. Oki Prize as the Best Student in Oral Surgery final Bachelor of Dental Surgery Examination in 1981, University of Ibadan, Long Service Award University of Benin Teaching Hospital in 2007, Award of Recognition of Academic achievement by Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Edo State Chapter in October 2011, Medical Noble International Award by Institute of Industrial Administration in October 2012, Award of recognition for contribution to the profession of Dentistry and Oral Health Care in Edo State by Nigerian Dental Association, Edo State Chapter in December 2013, Award of recognition of academic achievement as the first female elected Dean in University of Benin by Medical Women Association of Nigeria, Edo State Chapter in October 2013.

Prof. (Mrs.) A. Umweni is a Fellow of World Federation of Orthodontists, Fellow of Institute of Industrial Administration and also a Fellow of Human and National Resource. She is the current President of International Association of Dental Research (IADR), Nigeria Division.

Prof. (Mrs.) A. Umweni has been a resource person in clinical update, courses/workshops for Fellows and Postgraduate students organized by Faculty of Dental Surgery, West African College of Surgeons, External Examiner to West African College of Surgeons, and National Postgraduate Medical College. She is also an External Examiner to University of Nairobi, Kenya.
